Zhangjiajie International Airport’s History

In May 1988, The State Council approved the original county-level city Dayong into prefecture-level city. The origin jurisdiction belonged to Autonomous Sangzhi County, the origin Cili County of Changde District and Yongding District, Wulingyuan District.

On April 18, 1991, Premier Li Peng committed Dayong Airport to start construction.

On November 8, 1991, Groundbreaking ceremony was held in Dayong Airport.

On December 22, 1993, Dayong airport had its successful trials.

On January 14, 1994, Dayong airport was renamed “Zhangjiajie Dayong Airport”.

On April 4, 1994, The State Council approved Dayong city to be renamed as Zhangjiajie City.

On August 18, 1994, Zhangjiajie Dayong Airport officially declared navigable.

In October 31, 1995, Zhangjiajie Dayong Airport was renamed “Zhangjiajie Lotus Airport”.

In April 16, 1999, Zhangjiajie airports opened, and held the ceremony of first flight to Hong Kong. Then the Macau flights were opened.

In February 24, 2011, Zhangjiajie expanding airports open to foreign planes was approved by the state.

In November 17, 2011 China Civil Aviation Authority announced that from 0:00 on the 17th November, Zhangjiajie airports formally expanded opening up. And the airport upgraded to international airport open to all aircraft of foreign nationality. Zhangjiajie Lotus Airport was upgraded to Zhangjiajie International Airport.

In 2013 cross-strait charter flights to Taiwan was opened. It was operated by TransAsia Airways and China Southern Airlines with Taipei to Zhangjiajie route, and EVA Air is operating Kaohsiung to Zhangjiajie charter flights. The Cross-strait charter flights are the first cross-border regular flights for Zhangjiajie International Airport.
