Tradition has it that whoever firstly takes the wedding bed and sits in the middle of it, she or he will be the boss of the family. It sounds like a funny joke, but the Tujia people take serious with it, and some brides run like the wind for the wedding bed even without finishing the spousal in order to get the status and right of the family or not be “ordered” by her husband. By the way, if bridegroom takes the place first, the bride may crowd out him and share an equal position in the family.
